Family Time

There are a lot of missionaries that don’t really enjoy deputation.  We meet a lot of people who feel sorry for us having to travel so much with two small children.  We, however, are thankful for the opportunity God has given us to be on deputation.  How many parents get to spend 24 hours a day with their children?  How many parents have missed important moments in their kids lives that they will never get back?  Sure, there are times when we would like to put the kids on a boat and ship them as far away as possible, but those moments never last long and are usually followed by moments of sure joy and pride.

We are currently on a long road trip and will not be finished until the middle of November.  We have been going from one missions conference to another.  I am not complaining:  I am rejoicing.  I always say, “I’d rather be busy than bored.”  For some reason we were unable to get this week booked.  We have been in 5 churches and will be in 3 more beginning on November 1st.  This week was a nice little break for us between all the bookings.  We were in South Carolina and decided that we would like to stay around here during this week instead of heading back to Cincinnati.

I must be honest:  I was a little discouraged that I was unsuccessful in getting this week booked.  However, this week has been a wonderful blessing for our family.  We have been able to stay in one place for 7 days straight.  That may not seem like a lot to you, but that seems like an eternity for us.  Julianna and Tyler really needed this break.  They do really well on deputation but this month’s busy schedule has really taken a toll on them.  This week has been a great opportunity for us to focus on them:  a chance for us to make them feel special.  This week has been pretty special for us too.

I guess what I am trying to say is that I am thankful that God prevented us from booking this week.  I can’t tell you how many times this week Sheri and I both have said, “Man, I love our family!”  It is easy for us to get busy and forget how amazing children are and how much fun they can be.  We definitely have made some memories and our family has reconnected.

I know that your life is most likely a lot different than ours but I would encourage you to figure out a way to take some time for your family.  Trust me, this small break in our busy schedule has revealed to me just how precious our family is.

Thank you Lord, for the family you have given me.  Thank you for calling us into Your ministry and even for this opportunity to be on deputation.  May I never forget just how precious my wife is.  May I never forget just how precious my kids are.  May we continue to love each other and encourage one another as we work together as a family.
